I am in the process of working through the relationship between the Japanese kanji I already know and how they relate to the Chinese hanzi. Here are the first set of most frequently used characters in Chinese broken down into 5 groups. Characters that map exactly from Japanese to Chinese account for 53%. Of the remainder, Japanese matches 10% of the traditional hanzi, and 6% of the simplified versions. 6% of the traditional hanzi differ from the Japanese, and 15% of those that have been simplified. Finally, characters that have traditional and simplified versions of which neither match the Japanese kanji account for the last 10%.
1. The Chinese hanzi that are written exactly the same way as the Japanese kanji. Naturally, readings and to some extent meanings will differ:
